Boost Your Mood with Food!

Did you know that food is a natural way to boost mood? That’s right! Food is a kind-of “natural SSRI?” We’ve always known that it affects physical health, but we are only beginning to understand the huge impact on emotional and mental health.

Food

If you’re feeling kind of blah… maybe you just can’t shake the blues, try the food-mood solution. Eat foods that naturally increase your serotonin level--foods like turkey, chicken, eggs, nuts and seeds, milk, cheese, and pineapple. After all, most of your serotonin, your “well-being” neurotransmitter, is found in the gut. The brain-gut axis is your integrated wellness system!

Did you know that mood is also tied to blood sugar level? Maybe you get the “hangries.” One thing that can help is choosing “smart” carbs (aka complex carbs) instead of simple carbs, carbs like: whole grains, fruits, beans, most vegetables. And, when you eat those smart carbs combine them with protein and healthy fats to help balance blood sugar and “stay in a good mood.”

Meet Corey Ilesco, MS, RDN, our Serenata Wellness Registered Dietician!

Corey

She knows all about the food-mood connection and the brain-gut axis. When tragedy struck at the age of 32, she became a widow and the single mother of two preschoolers. Her cortisol level (stress hormone) was through the roof causing a plunge in her serotonin and a lot of problems—depression, weight gain, brain fog, low energy, anxiety. Not easy to parent two little boys all alone with all this going on and make it through the stages of grief.

She made it to the other side and set out to combine her personal experiences with her education and training in nutrition to help others. Now through Serenata she shares her mood boosting, brain-powering nutrition and lifestyle tips.
